The Ontario College of Trades ("OCOT") was established under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, (2009) to be an industry-driven organization with the mission of promoting the skilled trades and protecting the public interest through regulating trades in Ontario.

ALL apprentices, including students who are registered as OYAP Apprentices, are required to become members of the Ontario College of Trades.

While still in high school, OYAP apprentices are exempt from:
  • OCOT membership fees (DO NOT submit payment to OCOT if you are still in high school!)
  • Appearing in the OCOT public register
  • Being called before OCOT committees on complaints
  • Discipline and fitness to practice

OYAP students must apply to OCOT within 90 days* of their Training Agreements being registered by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). OYAP Apprentices may receive the OCOT application package with their Training Agreement, or OCOT may send the application package via mail or email. OYAP apprentices who are under the age of 18 also require that a parent/guardian sign an addendum. DO NOT SUBMIT PAYMENT to OCOT if you are still in high school!

*Failure to register within 90 days will result in the cancellation of the Registered Training Agreement. To continue as an apprentice, students may have to re-apply and sign a new Training Agreement with their sponsor.
